When I look at the color wheel in Prism 5 Mac, it is entirely black, so I can't choose any colors.

Prism 5 Mac uses the standard Mac color dialog. When you first bring it up, it shows the current color for the object whose color you are changing.

The Colors dialog has five tabs that let you choose colors by picking a 'crayon', by using sliders, by choosing from a spectrum, or by using a color wheel. The color wheel itself lets you choose a color. To the right is a vertical slider that determines how dark that color is.

Here  is the confusing part: When that slider is set all the way to the bottom, all the colors are maximally dark and so appear black. If your object was black, and you left the Colors dialog set to the color wheel tab, then it will appear entirely black. Move the slider up to see and choose colors.

While you are learning how to use the Colors dialog, here is a trick you may not have encountered. At the top left of the Colors dialog is a magnifying glass icon. Click it, and then click anywhere else on the screen to choose that color. This lets you match colors from another program.
