The problem of multiple comparisons
Interpreting one statistical comparison is hard enough. Interpreting a set of comparisons is much harder. If you don't correct for multiple comparisons, you are likely to get fooled by bogus 'significant' results. If you do correct for multiple comparisons, you lose power to detect real differences.
