Running Prism 6 and 7 Windows on a high resolution display

Prism 6 Windows does not completely support high resolution (high dpi) displays.  Prism 7 works much better.

There can be two problems:

  • Fonts in dialogs may be fuzzy. And the text can be too large so it gets cut off and you can't read it all.

  • With some control panel settings, the toolbar in Prism 6 can be too small, and the drop down where you choose point size is too narrow. You may also notice that cleartype fonts doesn't work, so fonts are a bit fuzzy.

Three possible fixes:

  • With Prism not running, right click on the Prism.exe file, choose Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and select this option: "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings"
  • In the Windows Control Panel > Region > Current language for non-Unicode programs on the Administrative tab, choose English (or try any language different than the current setting).
  • Change the settings on the Display control panel in Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 to not use a custom scaling and also don't check the option to use XP style DPI scaling.

Uncheck that XP option (or use a standard scaling factor) and the point size drop down will be wider, so you can see the point size of selected text. Additionally, the size of the icons will vary depending on the resolution you choose. If you set the scale to 150%, the toolbar will be 50% larger than it is at 100%. But only if you uncheck the XP option.

With the Microsoft Surface and Windows 8.1, you can turn off high resolution scaling just for one program. This page explains:
