Bug: Prism Windows crashes when you try to drop the Help menu

Background: When you drop the Help menu in Prism 7, Prism reads the Windows registry key that specifies Prism's files extension associations. If Windows is not set up so the version of Prism you are running will launch when you double click on a pzf or pzfx file, the command "Register PZFX extension" is added to the Help menu.

In rare cases, Prism will crash when trying to read the Windows registry.

To resolve this issue, first reboot your computer, as that solves lots of issues.

Next, run Prism with admin rights. Do this by right-clicking on the Prism icon and choose "Run as administrator"

If those those solutions don't work, remove the registry key with Prism files associations (so Prism can recreate them when you restart it). The two registry keys to delete are:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\.PZFX
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\.PZF

To remove these styles, follow the steps below. Editing styles should be done very carefully, and many ask a Windows guru or IT person to do the job for them.

  1. Press Windows+R keys combination
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate on left panel to keys
  4. Right-click and choose "Delete" command from context menu
