How to search and replace text in GraphPad Prism.

While GraphPad Prism has a command to search for all sheets that include specified text, it does not have a command to search and replace. But there is an easy workaround:

  1. Save your file in .PZFX format (not .PZF format). Most of the .PZFX format is in plain text XML. It has been available since Prism 4.
  2. Open the .PZFX file in a plain text editor. Windows comes with Notepad. Mac comes with Text Edit. There are lots of other text editors. But don't use Word, or any other Word processing program, which will save a file in its own format, not in plain text.
  3. Search and replace. The Replace command is on the Edit menu of Windows Notepad. The Find command, which leads to a Replace command, is on the Edit command of OS X Text Edit. With other programs, you'll need to find the right command.
  4.  All the text in data and info tables, as well as sheet titles, will get replaced.
  5. Save the .PZFX file as text. Don't let your program add a new extension or change the format.
  6. Open the file in Prism. All text in row and column titles, sheet names and info tables will have been replaced. When Prism recalculates analyses and redraws graphs, the text you replaced in the data tables will update on the graphs. But note that any text you entered directly on a graph or layout will not get fixed.

Notes

  • Make sure you use a text editor, not a word processor.
  • Make sure you only edit or replace text. If anything in the XML structure changes, even the loss of a single angled bracket, Prism won't be able to open the file.
