Prism 6 crashes when Display Fusion is running

The problem. Prism 6 Windows repeatedly crashes when you are working with graphs or layouts, and gives a very generic "Prism 6.00 has stopped working" message.

The cause. The interaction between Prism 6 and the utility Display Fusion. We saw the problem with version 4.0.1, and didn't try earlier versions.

Display Fusion is a utility that lets you easily configure two (or more) displays, giving you more control than does Windows. It also gives you a task bar at the bottom of each of your displays, rather than only on your primary display (the default behavior of Windows).  You can tell that Display Fusion is running and interacting with Prism, because you'll see an extra icon (or several) in the title bar at the top of the Prism window.

One workaround, of course, is to uninstall Display Fusion. But you'll probably want to keep it for use with other programs.

You can end the crashing problems by configuring Display Fusion not to work within Prism:

  1. Click Start > All Programs > Display Fusion (folder) > Display Fusion Settings.
  2. In the Display Fusion v4.0.1 settings window, click Compatibility on the list on the left of the window.
  3. Once open, click Add.  In the new window that pops up, click Select Application.
  4. Click Browse and browse for GraphPad Prism. (File Path:  C:\Program Files\GraphPad\Prism6\prism.exe)
  5. Uncheck all options on the Compatibility screen, click OK, then click Apply. You may wish to experiment with other combinations. We're told that everything works fine if you uncheck the first option and the last two options, but leave the othes checked.
