Prism 8 Windows bug: Corrupted colors or missing images when you export to pdf or eps

What happens?

 Graphs or layouts exported to PDF or EPS formats from Prism 8.0.0 or 8.0.1 rarely show these problems:

  • Colors may appear corrupted in 64-bit Prism 8 edition;
  • Exported drawing may be missing at all in 32-bit Prism 8 edition;
  • Vector images previously imported to Prism may appear blurry.

Why it happens?

The problem only occurs when:

  • Using Prism 8 Windows.
  • Exporting graphs or layouts to PDF or EPS format
  • The graph or layout includes an imported (or pasted) picture in WMF format
  • This WMF image contains transparent colors (alpha channel).

When exporting to PDF or EPS format, Prism incorrectly renders transparent colors and as a result, transparent colors appear black. Additionally, if you imported large bitmaps wrapped into WMF, they may be missing on the exported file on 32-bit systems, because 32-bit systems have less internal memory resources to handle larger raster images.

Alternative workarounds:

  • Use the 64-bit version of Prism if you can. It handles more memory on exporting so resolves the issue with missing images (but not the problem with transparent colors becoming black).
  • Print (instead of export) your graph or layout to a PDF file. This is done from the Print dialog but requires that an appropriate pdf engine already be installed on your computer. Printing instead of exporting will resolve both corrupted colors and missing images.
  • Compose the original pictures with lower size and DPI and remove transparency from the WMF files,
  • Export to a different format (not eps or pdf)

Fix

Will be fixed in 8.0.2
