Showing residuals on a XY graph with a regression line or curve

Prism gives you the choice to make a separate graphs of residuals from linear or nonlinear regression. But sometimes, perhaps for teaching, you want to show the residuals right on the graph of the data and fit.

Prism does not make it easy to create this graph, but it can be done. Follow these steps:

  1. Enter your data on a table with only one column of Y values. If you have subcolumns, this method won't work.
  2. Fit your data, and check the box to create a residual plot (an option on the last tab of the noniin dialog or the main tab of linear regrssion).
  3. Reformat your data table to have a sub column for SD values.
  4. Copy the residuals and paste into the SD sub column.
  5. On the graph, turn off the caps on the error bars (on the Format Graph dialog).
  6. One by one, right click on the points, choose to format that point, and then choose the appropriate error bar direction (up or down).
