Slow opening and saving of files from Prism Mac 5 over a network.

We know of one situation where saving and opening Prism files can be very slow. That is when you are running Prism 5 Mac and opening/saving files over a network configured using the SMB  protocol. The SMB (samba) protocol is mostly used on Windows computers.

We'll have  fiedx this problem (speed up file access) in  Prism 6. For Prism 5, here are some suggestions:

  • Instead of directly opening and saving via a SMB network from Prism mac,  save/open on a local drive, and then later transfer to network drives.
  • Use the PZFX file format, rather than PZF. There are two advantages. First, PZFX files tend to be much smaller (often less than 10% as large). Second, because they are XML-based, PZFX files get moved much more quickly over a SMB network.
  • If possible, use the AFB network protocol, rather than SMB.
