Transferring user-defined equations from one computer to another.

There are two approaches to restoring user defined equations.

Approach 1: Open files that use the equations.

The user-defined equation is saved within every Prism file that uses it to generate or fit a curve. Open such a file, go to the results page, go to the parameters dialog, and click the button to bring up the Equation dialog. Then click OK twice. Editing the equation, or even just bringing up that dialog, will add that equation to your user-defined list.

To transfer user-defined transformations, bring up the Transform dialog of transforms that use user-defined transforms. Clicking OK from the Transform dialog will transfer that user-defined transform to your list.

Approach 2: Move or restore a copy of the Prism preferences file.

The Prism preferences file contains your user-defined equations, preference settings, color schemes, list of recently used files, autocomplete text, and more. You can manually copy this configuration file from your old computer to the new one. The location of this file depends on your operating system, and the version of Prism:

Prism 5 and 6 Windows
The file is called Prism5.cfg or Prism 6.cfg and it is located in:

  • Win 2000:
    [system disk]:\Documents and Settings\[local user]
  • Windows XP
    [system disk]:\Documents and Settings\[user] \Application data\GraphPad Software\Prism\6.0    (or \5.0)
  • Vista and Windows 7/8
    [system disk]:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\GraphPad Software\Prism\6.0     (or \5.0)

Prism 5 or 6 Mac

The file is called com.GraphPad.Prism.plist and it is located in:

  • : ~[local user]:Library:Preferences

Prism 4 Windows
The file is called Prism4.cfg and it is located in:

  • Windows 98: In the windows folder
  • Windows NT: In the winnt folder.
  • Win 2000:
    [system disk]:\Documents and Settings\[local user]
  • Windows XP:
    Documents and settings/[user]/Application data/GraphPad Software/Prism/ 4.0
  • Windows Vista:
    [system disk]:\Users\[local user]\AppData\Roaming\GraphPad Software\Prism\4.0

Prism 3 Windows
The file is called Prism3.cnf, but since some versions of Windows refuse to show the ".cnf" extension, it usually shows up as the Prism 3 "speed dial" file. No this isn't a joke, it really does show up as a speed dial file!

  • Windows 95/98: In the windows folder
  • Windows NT : In the winnt folder.
  • Windows 2000: [system disk]:/Documents and Settings/[local user]
  • Windows XP: Documents and settings/[some user]/Application data/Prism

Prism Mac 3 or 4

  • Mac OS 8, 9: In the Preferences folder within the System folder
  • Mac OS X: ~[local user]:Library:Preferences

Depending on Prism verison, the preferences file is named: "Prism4 Preferences" or "Prism3 Preferences".
