What is the difference between Prism, InStat and StatMate?
GraphPad's three programs -- Prism, InStat, and StatMate -- are all quite different.
InStat does basic statistical comparisons but no graphing. It is very easy to use and thus is perfect for students with little statistical experience or training. The only thing that InStat does that Prism does not is multiple regression analysis.
Prism is our main program. It combines and integrates statistics, curve fitting and graphing. With the exception of multiple regression analysis, it does everything that InStat does - and much more. Since it does more, it is not quite as step-by-step easy to use as InStat. It does, however, have lots of teaching built in, and when compared to other stats and graphing programs, it is very intuitive and easy to learn.
StatMate is really quite different from either InStat or Prism. The only thing that StatMate does is sample-size and power calculations. Neither InStat nor Prism does these.
Because there is some overlap between Prism and InStat, many people find that they do not need both. If you need non-linear regression, graphing, and the tests that Prism does that InStat does not (survival analysis, two-way ANOVA, ROC curves, Bland-Altman plots, and more), you should get Prism. There is no overlap between StatMate and the other programs. If you need to do the kind of calculations StatMate does, it is the only program that we offer that does them.
We offer 30-day free demos of each program. It's really the best way to see how they differ. You can download the demos here:
