When I open a Prism files, why does Prism say it is Read-only?

If Prism detects that a file is read-only, it warns you when you open it. In this case, the Save command won't work but you can use Save As to save with a different name and/or to a different location.

If you didn't deliberately set the permission of the file to read-only, here are some steps to follow to troubleshoot:

  • Reboot. Really! That solved the problem for one person with this issue.
  • Make sure the file is not open by another instance (version) of Prism on the same computer, or on another computer accessing the same folder via the network.
  • Make sure the permission isn't really read-only. On Windows, right click on the file name in Explorer, choose Properties, and then see if read-only is checked. On Mac, right click (control-click) ont he file name in Finder, and choose Get Info. Check the Permissions at the bottom of the dialog, to make sure you have permisison to Write to that file.
  • If you are not logged in with admin rights, try logging in with an admin account. Or try saving to a different folder. Some folders are off limits unless you have admin rights.
  • Could it be your antivirus software? Update it. Or temporarily disable it, to see if the anti-virus software is causing the problems.
