Factors that could affect Prism's Performance

The system requirements for Prism can be found in this article. However, a few users asked questions about improving the performance of the software. We would like to share the replies.

Does Prism benefit from a higher grade GPU? Does Prism use any type of GPU for analyzing data?

Prism does not use a GPU or its components directly. It is the operating system that allocates and manages resources, including a GPU, when needed.

Does Prism benefit from newer CPUs?

Newer and faster processors increase the overall computer`s performance as well as improve the performance of any software installed on it. As long as Prism requires computing power for data analyses and graphing, faster CPUs may noticeably increase Prism’s performance.

Does Prism benefit from a number of cores on CPU?

Starting from version 8, Prism benefits from multiple cores in CPU. The following analyses in Prism 8 (and newer) support multithreading calculations:

  • Nonlinear regression with profile-likelihood CI calculation;

  • One-Way RM ANOVA with Mixed-effects model;

  • Two-Way RM ANOVA with Mixed-effects model;

  • Three-Way RM ANOVA with Mixed-effects model;

  • Nested t-test for all parameters;

  • Nested one-way ANOVA for all parameters.

We are working on extending the list of Prism’s analysis supporting multiple cores.

Does Prism work faster with more RAM?

More RAM increases the overall computer's performance, as it helps the processor to access data faster. With tasks, where Prism needs to operate large amounts of data, more RAM may increase Prism's performance. There is a limitation on the 32-bit edition of Windows operating system in Prism, though. On such configuration, Prism cannot use more, than 2 GB of RAM. We recommend using a 64-bit edition of Windows on which you will be installing 64-bit edition of Prism that does not have such a RAM limitation.

Does Prism work faster on an SSD drive?

SSD usage on a computer allows the system to boot faster, increases the performance of accessing and storing the data, improves the data transfer speed. Same as other software, Prism performs faster on SSD, in particular, when opening and importing, saving and exporting files, performing automatic backups, and other operations.
